Can your Server handle it or not?

Are you ready for the traffic you've been dying to get? Can you handle 5 figure unique visitors per day or an hour? You may think that you are ready but may most likely be in for a shocker. I recently decided to join the Web 2.0 fad. It's no longer a fad. And started trying out some things. My article was submitted to slashdot.org. Well not most publisher have got this pleasant experience... I was slash dotted as thousands of unique visitors were pouring in in few minutes. Then my hosting company took action. The directory was shut down for abuse. I was asked to upgrade my hosting package to be able to handle the traffic.

Most publishers have been buying all kinds of books and paying expensive seminar fees to increase traffic but are you really prepared for the traffic?

In my case it was not just the issue of bandwidth or disk space. I was consuming less than 10% of the bandwidth as I thought. If you are using a shared hosting you will be in for a shocker when the traffic you have seriously worked for finally begin to pour in. You never can tell how many sites are on the server that you are sharing. The figures they give you is the figure for the server but shared by many.

I took the advice and now on a dedicated server with my private DNS.

Before you continue your search for increased traffic, you must know what your server can handle. Discuss with your hosting company by speculating your traffic and see what best plan will be most suitable.

Don't take this forgranted as you may just wakeup to see that you site is down for abuse. You never can tell what may happen if someone stumbles on your article and bookmarks it on a site like slashdot and it is published! That incredible traffic that may bring you adsense (or any other) earnings may never materialize. Your situation may be worse than mine. It took me one month to recover. To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed.
